Lofi Ledger: a calm little game about where your money goes
Lofi Ledger is a free, relaxing money-and-life game. You start at 18 with a small graduation gift and your first paycheque. Each quarter you decide where your money goes: savings, investments, education, a home, a car and more. Then you watch twenty years of ordinary life unfold, with raises, rent hikes, lucky breaks and the occasional broken laptop. Your cosy lofi bedroom changes as you do: the building outside grows taller, the window gets bigger, a cat moves in, and the seasons turn.
There is no timer, no score to beat and no game over. It's a quiet way to see how small, steady choices add up. You don't need an account, and your progress saves automatically in your browser.
Every game starts by meeting one of eleven different girls, each with her own look and a slightly different room (you can choose a different one before you begin). As you play you'll see three numbers: your net worth, her wellbeing (a cushion of savings, a comfy home, rest and good company lift it; debt, stress and overwork pull it down) and her karma (giving and kindness raise it, selfish choices lower it). All three go on the picture you can share at the end.
How to play
- On a computer: use and to pick a row, to add money to it and to take it back (or withdraw from something you own). Every quarter takes exactly five presses of , spread across whatever you like; after the fifth, the quarter closes by itself. Space finishes a quarter early, M mutes the sound, S shares your game so far (you can do this at any time, not just at the end) and T switches between light and dark.
- On a phone or tablet: swipe a row to the right to add money to it (the further you swipe, the more you add) and to the left to take it back; swiping left on something you own, with nothing added this quarter, withdraws from it (with a fee). You can also tap a row to select it and use + Add and − Back at the bottom. Next finishes the quarter early.
- Life events: every so often a card appears with a choice: a flatmate offer, a new job, a windfall, an unexpected bill. There are no right answers, only trade-offs.
- The finish: after 20 years you get a results card you can share. You can keep playing in ten-year steps, or start a new life.
What the categories mean
- Savings: safe and steady (about 4% a year in the game), with a tiny fee to take money out. The first thing to reach for in an emergency.
- Investments: about 7% a year on average, but bumpy: some quarters dip. Selling costs a small fee.
- Education: raises your pay as you upgrade, from online courses to a PhD. You can't take it back out. Once you've maxed it out, a side hustle opens up that can grow into a business: riskier, with bigger swings.
- Real estate: builds equity, saves you rent and grows slowly, but selling costs more. Transport: trims your living costs a little, then becomes pure style.
- Comfort, charity, art and bets don't sit on the main list. They turn up as opportunities inside life events. Charity has no financial return, bets usually lose, and art grows slowly.
Tips for a calm run
- Keep some money in savings. Events cost money, and if you can't cover a bill the game puts it on a credit card that charges 3% every quarter.
- Education early tends to pay off through higher pay for the rest of the game.
- Don't panic when investments dip. In this game they drift upward over long stretches, and selling in a dip locks the loss in.
- Try a different mix on your next life. Nothing here is a recommendation; it's a game.
Questions
How realistic are the numbers?
They are loosely based on US dollars and simplified on purpose: pay grows a little each quarter, living costs creep up with inflation, and each category has its own typical return, risk and cost to withdraw. Real life has taxes, regional prices, health, family and luck that the game doesn't model. Treat it as a story about trade-offs, not a forecast.
Is this financial advice?
No. Lofi Ledger is a game. Nothing in it is advice, an offer or a recommendation, and the returns in it are made up. For decisions about your own money, speak to a qualified professional.
Do I need an account? Where is my game saved?
No account. Your game saves automatically in this browser, on this device. Clearing your browser's site data, or playing in a private window, will remove it. The button starts a new game.
Why does the room keep changing?
One turn is one quarter, which is one season, so the sky, the tree outside, the light and what she's wearing change with it. Your choices change the room too: buy a home, get promoted, adopt a cat.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Swipe a row right to add money and left to take it back, or tap a row and use the buttons at the bottom of the screen.
Why is there no sound at first?
Browsers only allow sound after your first tap or keypress. Press M, or the speaker button, to mute whenever you like.
Is it free?
Yes, it is free to play, with no sign-up.
